Mary Ann Nichols stared at the cold and foggy night through her tiny window at Wilmott’s Lodging House in Spitalfields, wondering whether she would go to work or stay home and wait for her children.

Edward, Percy, and Alice, the older kids, had already left the house and lived independently. However, Eliza and little Henry were still her responsibility, and she knew that they would come to the lodge tomorrow morning asking for something to eat and ease their hunger.

She looked in the pantry to find only tea and two biscuits but no butter or jam. Realizing it wouldn’t be enough for them, she decided to work just one more time.
