How To Become a Computer Expert Without Trying
Five lessons learned while “Looking at Life Through My Computer Screen.”
I am an Industrial Designer, and to pay for my college, I worked in the software business.
I knew nothing about computers until the 1977 National Computer Conference (NCC) in NY., when I stood in front of something that changed my life.
A monitor, the size of a washing machine, there was a black field with mountains, trees, and farms, and on top of all, a small plane. As it flew to the back of the screen, it appeared to shrink. Then when it came closer, it grew larger. I realized it was all an illusion. There were no background, mountains, or trees, and the plane wasn’t moving back and front. It was all painted on a flat black screen with tiny green light dots! But the perspective was perfect.
The little green plane made me shift my career from Industrial Design to computing.
That scorching summer day in 1977 changed me, and I dedicated my life to using, working, fixing, and disassembling any computer possible for 43 years.
I lived the gaming revolution from character games like Tic-Tac and Blackjack. Atari’s 1972 PONG, and Steve Wozniak’s Breakout, to the modern online games.
